i know reign takes place in an alternate universe partly inspired by philippa gregory novels and partly by the kind of paperback ~historic~ romance novels you can buy for like 50 cents at garage sales and i should accept that but…knowing what i do esp. about 16th cent. history makes it kind of hard to enjoy at times sksksksk?

part of the alternate universe acts like the execution of two of h8′s wives suddenly set the ‘standard’ for europe/that they all follwed suit; re: that every other country decided that all you needed was an adultery accusation to have grounds for executing a queen consort….

even though adultery wasn’t enough in england; anne was executed on (false, we all now know) the grounds of treason (’planning to kill the king’), adultery, and incest. for katherine it was still treason, it just had to involve them changing the law to define what treason was…….

my point being that whole premise is based on a big/common misconception anyway; that their only charges were adultery or that adultery was enough to constitute treason…much less that the rest of europe followed suit to how the laws had been amended to redefine treason in england, anyway.

but then i remember the soap opera antics, the poisoned bible plot twist and all the batshit others, and the wily binch reels me back in…….

Do you have any thoughts on what Anne’s plans for Elizabeth would have been if she lived, or how she would have influenced her daughter’s upbringing? (I’m thinking of COA commissioning Education of a Christian Woman for Mary, being involved in her education that way & wondering if Anne might’ve done similar)

I don’t know about upbringing exactly; I think probably an education that was similar to hers, a focus on languages (which seemed to be what ended up happening anyway, under Henry’s guidance, so maybe that would have been mutual). Evangelical-leaning tutors; if she could manage to secure some as she was sponsoring several scholars that were evangelical-leaning…perhaps Nicholas Bourbon, had he stayed. Anne and Henry were both composers themselves, so probably an immersive music education as well. And she’d want her to read City of Ladies, and works by Marguerite de Navarre.

She seemed to want a French marriage alliance for her (although that was rebuffed); I think had she had a son by that point, the betrothal of Elizabeth and the dauphin would probably have been secured (although he died in 1536, so…). Had Henry made an alliance with the Emperor; they would both try to secure a betrothal with the future Philip II of Spain.
