what was henry 8’s relationship with his father like? I once read he had issues with him, but also threw an enourmous funeral for him? and as for h7, he favored arthur, but after his and eoy’s death he spent more time with henry, (yes,he was the heir now, but I read an ambassador wrote ‘that the kind did love his son’), but there were still issues? I’m just kinda confused

Hmm…it was like not the best but tbh I don’t think it was the worst?

Sorry that’s such a nothing answer, but that’s about the best I got.

Also idt it was so much about h7 ‘favoring Arthur’ as it was that, Arthur was the heir, so he of course needed to spend a lot of time with him and make him ready for kingship. He did the same with Henry (to his chagrin, at times) after Arthur died and he was the heir inheretix; if anything kept him closer because he was the last remaining male heir.

There’s an account from an, I think it was, Italian ambassador? That identified Hocho Jr. as ‘Eoy’s son’ and Arthur as ‘Henry’s son’– its meaning has probably been inflated a bit as this is one of the only observations we have of all four of them standing together, alone. Of course the king would stand with his heir when receiving an important visitor and of course the queen would stand with the second eldest prince. She likely spent more time with him at Eltham than h7 did, but it’s not because h7 was like “oh man, that kid’s the worst” (or…I guess we can’t rule that out but I think he was, y’know, busy and had limited time…running a country and such…)

The funeral for him was lavish, and he spent quite a pretty penny on the memorial statues of his parents and on the bust of h7 by Torrigiano. He also expanded the King’s Spears, which was a company instituted by his father. H7 also had him tutored by musicians when he saw Hocho Jr. had an aptitude for it. Henry paid his father’s barber an annual salary for the rest of his life. The bust and statues could be dismissed as preservation of the dynastic image; but some of this strikes me as more sentimental.

They had a strained relationship at times probably because they had bedrooms that were adjacent and connected to each other and h8 chafed at the restrictions re: not being to joust, and being watched like a hawk. Both were of different temperaments and personalities, but they weren’t complete opposites imo….less like fire meeting gasoline, more like oil and water, maybe? Some of the stuff portraying a wholly negative relationship was written by those with an axe to grind, such as Reginald Pole.

I hope that makes sense? Lol…it is kind of confusing, because there are conflicting sources at times, and every Tudor historian seems to have a very particular opinion on it. Personally, I like Starkey’s analysis of their relationship best, which he delves into in Virtuous Prince. I go into that a bit here, on this ask, if you wanted to read more.
