Opinions on Mary Boleyn

And I beseech you, good master secretary, pray my lord my father and my lady to be so good to us, and to let me have their blessings and my husband their good will; and I will never desire more of them. Also, I pray you, desire my lord of Norfolk and my lord my brother to be good to us. I dare not write to them, they are so cruel against us; but if, with any pain that I could take with my life, I might win their good wills, I promise you there is no child living would venture more than I.

So that’s an excerpt from her letter to Thomas Cromwell after she was banished from court for marrying without permission.

My impression from this is that her male relatives were not especially kind to her. Bearing that in my mind, I tend to think that she made the decision to marry someone before a husband could be chosen for her by her father, brother, uncle etc.

Because her marriage prospects could only have gotten better/wealthier, not worse, after she was officially the Queen’s sister (she was unmarried for a few years after Carey died), I don’t think wealth was enough of an incentive.

“Carey died greatly in debt” (? according to Wiki)…Mary sold Anne a piece of her jewelery after Carey’s death (Henry gifted Anne the money to buy it, we know this because there’s an account of it in his Privy Purse expenses) so that could very well be. It’s also possible the marriage wasn’t a love match, and Mary didn’t want a similar one arranged that was based on lineage ( Carey was the third cousin of Henry VIII).

If Anne ~has married Percy, what do you think her life would’ve looked like? Do you think anything still might’ve happened w h8 (like both divorcing for each other/becoming his mistress/loving each other but not acting on it or whatever) or do you think they would’ve passed like ships in the night never knowing what could have been…

Not a fan of this AU because not a fan of him, honestly but like…idk?

He never had children with his IRL wife and I think everyone’s been like “oh well because he hated her” but I find it a little strange… because if they never consummated that marriage or only did once or w/e, that would mean he didn’t care about passing his title down to his own issue and that’s a bit strange for a 16th century English nobleman, tbh,

That or he had fertility issues, or Talbot did, or both…if the former, sad for Anne because I think she really wanted to be a mother.

As for Henry 8…mmm… maybe? He didn’t have a habit of taking married mistresses, at all (unless that affair with Mary Boleyn was after her marriage, it might have just been before tho)…he entertained marrying Christina of Denmark and she was a widow, and obviously did marry Parr who was one, but other than that…

I don’t think Henry would’ve annulled his marriage on the hope a wed woman would annull her own, he probably would have anyway had he not had a male heir by 1527 but not with marrying an English noblewoman in mind.

There might have been an attraction anyway because who knows, but Anne would never commit adultery against her husband– we know she never did, so.

“Casting off all others besides you out of my thoughts and affections”, and that she evidently responded favorably to that (tentatively, in his next letter he writes he’s “please she still has some remembrance of him”) could mean she would have been his mistress were he unmarried, but I don’t think she would be if she herself was married.

For nosy asks! Tell us more about the latest chapter you’re writing? Or your day? Or your favorite outfit this week? Whatever you like! You know I love to hear what you’re up to!

My day is…okay…I brought my notebook but not my pens, which is very annoying and I’ll remember that tomorrow. Also have a headache, which is…annoying…so I’m probably going to get an iced coffee and like. Bang my head against a desk if that doesn’t do the trick…

I worked a bit on an article I have due in a week.

Okay wellll last night I was working on the intro scene for the second chapter of…the fanfic of your fanfic (lm a o…literally just fell in love with it, needed to read more, so wrote it myself like. if only i could do this with some of my own originals~ fjskdkfslj) until I remembered I had to pack my backpack for work lololol….spoilers~:

Opens up with George and Anne at cafe, we find out his job and are re-reminded of her job (at Bloomsbury publishing….which meeeans a very significant book will be published soon on the timeline! It being January 1997….*eyes emoji*) and we find out Anne has a date…coming up….. ahem

I’ll leave the rest a surprise but I have it more or less outlined in notes (my outlines should be neater as an aside they’re more like….lines of dialogue + nebulous scene ideas with a lot of ‘???’ and arrows and ‘???’ on arrows…going different directions…because sometimes we just can’t decide shshsh).

And last night I was rereading comments on my works (and yours shshshh I was feeling nostalgic about WFTH and you’re so good at correspondence, much better than I am tbh…I get overwhelmed and just end up saying ‘Thanks!’) and you are so insightful?? Btw?? I was rereading certain comments you left on Whitehall and like … crying.

Speaking of Whitehall, since I know it’s been an age, there’s a block and I’m not? It’s so frustrating because I do have SOME scenes written/sketched but they’re not ready yet for the timeline, I know what I was planning to do for the next chapter but keep getting blocked.

I think…maybe? I just need to reread (or at least skim) and get myself reacquainted because…idk I feel that Whitehall just has a very specific energy. Like it’s not easily interchangeable with some of my other…works….even the H7/EoY one that’s in the same verse? On the same timeline? Is very different…..but I like to think, in my pretentious meta way (shshsh) that there’s a reason to that, that it’s sort of symbolic of how their marriage (since it takes place pre-marriage) changes the world, and their own IRL/historic marriage changed the world in very significant ways that they could have like…never imagined or anticipated.

HUGe spoilers for scenes to come, in no particular order: Charles and Anne (yes lmao I know!!), Katherine and Henry, Lizzy and Henry (again? yes, she’s mad at him and calls him out on things I plan for it to be … amazing, I won’t settle for anything less, but it’ll also be very emotional and tie into some other…concepts), Kitty Howard and Anne, Charles and Anna, Elizabeth Woodville and Henry (phone call), Elizabeth and Katherine (!! a sort of … confrontation of sorts, actually, she stumbles across a … thing), Charles and Henry, Charles is going to meet….someone he hasn’t met before. George will also meet someone he hasn’t met before.

Ok, thank you for giving me the opportunity!! I love you and getting asks from you ❤
