I was thinking how it’s interesting that Jane isn’t really the character we learn things about, like there’s very little mystery around her character. Not there isn’t any, but we knew most things about Jane from the beginning. The Narrator knows everything about Jane (again, why I think the Narrator is Jane). And that’s not a bad thing; Jane is sort of like the viewer, she’s us. She experiences things with us, she usually learns things along with us.

It’s Jane’s story and we know Jane and I think that’s a good thing. Like, I love Petra and I realize that sometimes not knowing things about a character is important in story-telling, but sometimes not knowing her motivations is a little stressful. So to have a character (the main character) where you pretty much know what their motivations are, it’s nice.

Jane the Virgin really is written like a book, which I’m sure is intentional because the show is Jane’s book. And in most books we learn things along with the main character. Jane usually knows about as much as we do. Sometimes we know more because they show us, but other times a storyline is revealed through Jane’s perspective and I love that. I know it’s not THAT unusual to do it that way, but something about the way JtV does it (most of the time) feels rewarding. Maybe it’s Gina’s acting because you can really feel her reacting to something that feels authentic.
