Oh nice, I’ll do men and women and for this one–
Overrated male figure of the Tudor era, I would say Thomas More. Underrated male figure, I would say Thomas Wolsey (he was actually a lot more charitable than he’s often given credit for, and a fair deal more merciful as Chancellor than More ever was).
I hesitate to use the term ‘overrated’ in the sense of ‘ugh get OVER them already’ in this instance, so I won’t, but I will say that I think Jane Seymour’s influence is overrated a lot– she’s credited with ‘reconciling Mary with Henry’, but she didn’t really… do that. She tried to, which was commendable, but ultimately Henry reconciled with her on his own terms (was only willing to once she signed the Acts); Jane didn’t change his mind about that (actually, she’d asked for her to be reinstated– something he sort of did, years after her death, with a new Succession Act so idt we can really like…credit that to Jane’s influence).
Also her lack of influence was pretty well known, I would say, because she received far less petitions in her first year as Queen Consort than KOA in her first year, or AB in hers.
For an underrated female figure of the Tudor era, I would say Anne Askew.
