I’m honestly so on the fence about this? I’d have to do more reading to give a thorough answer.
If it was intentional/plotted I don’t think Robert Dudley or Elizabeth had anything to do with it, tho…even if they were ruthless (well, the latter, certainly, but it’s not as if she was the first leader to be so) they weren’t stupid and that it made THEM look guilty (or more so Robert) makes me think it was someone else trying to discredit him/ them. There were always those that would be jealous of the monarch’s favorites and do anything to get ahead.
